Q: Why am I losing Medicaid or CHIP coverage now?
A: Congress passed legislation during the COVID-19 pandemic to guarantee that people would have access to health insurance and other benefits while the nation was in a state of public health emergency (PHE). This provided continuous coverage for those enrolled in the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Medicaid, even if their eligibility changed. Now that the PHE has ended, individuals and families that have received Medicaid coverage have had their eligibility reevaluated through a state-run procedure known as “Medicaid Unwinding.”
Q: Who is affected by the loss of coverage, also known as “Medicaid Unwinding”?
A: It is anticipated that 15 million people have lost or will lose their Medicaid coverage as states continue to review the eligibility of Medicaid members, including about 8 million who are deemed ineligible and about 7 million due to administrative churn. Approximately 2.7 million of these people will be eligible for employer-sponsored health plans.
Q: Will not having insurance affect the health care I receive?
A: There’s no doubt that having quality health insurance increases your access to care. With the help of subsidies through the Healthcare.gov marketplace, there are affordable options for you and your family.
Q: If I’m losing Medicaid or CHIP coverage, do I have to wait for open enrollment to get different insurance?
A: You don’t have to wait. If you’re losing Medicaid or CHIP coverage, you can enroll to get coverage at the start of the next month.
Q: Is it true that it doesn’t cost me anything to get the help of an Ark agent?
A: It’s totally true! There’s no additional cost to get help from a health insurance agent/broker like Ark. Our fees are paid by the insurance carriers, not you.
Q: Will I get better health insurance if I work with an Ark agent?
A: Knowing which plan will get you the healthcare you need at the lowest possible cost is what our agents do. Don’t waste hours comparing plans and navigating the exchange. Our experienced agents can do this stuff in their sleep.
